To improve maternal and newborn health and reduce maternal and newborn deaths, health systems need to be strengthened, taking into account the broader socio-cultural determinants, including gender inequalities. Most maternal and child deaths could be prevented if quality maternal health and HIV/AIDS services were provided before, during and after delivery by skilled health personnel.

UNFPA Equatorial Guinea 7th Country Program Document focus on achieving universal access to sexual and reproductive health, realizing reproductive rights and reducing maternal mortality in the country to accelerate progress in meeting the objectives of the National Plan of Economic Development by 2035 as well as the Plan of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD). UNFPA intends to redouble its efforts to achieve the 3 Zeros: 0 preventable maternal deaths; 0 unmet need for family planning; and 0 gender-based violence, including harmful traditional practices and child marriages.

From Wednesday August 31st to Friday 02 September 2022, the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and the United Nations Population Fund-UNFPA will organize the presentation of the Final Report of the Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Project and the Methodological Document of the Second Demographic and Health Survey (DHS-II) and at the Anda-China Hotel in Malabo. The event will be chaired by the Vice-Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Mr. Mitoa ONDO AYECABA and the Resident Representative of UNFPA, Ms. Hind JALAL. The participants include representatives from the Government, Development Partners, Private companies, academia, media and the Sister United Nations agencies.

In the framework of the implementation of the Maternal Mortality Reduction Roadmap developed by the Government in 2008, UNFPA Equatorial Guinea engaged with Nobel Energy (now Chevron) and the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to reduce Maternal and Neonatal Mortality in the country. A seven- year program 2015-2021 was implemented to “Reduce Maternal and Neonatal Mortality (RMMNN) in provinces of Bioko North and Kie Ntem”. This program, which ended in March 2022 yielded substantive outcomes for beneficiaries in the country and stands as good practice to be shared widely and leveraged to reap additional support and interest from other Private Sector partners to advance reproductive health in Africa.

With regard to the DHS, and taking into account that the 2011 data are now obsolete, there is a need to conduct the second DHS in Guinea Equatorial, whose data will allow for the follow-up and monitoring of the national economic and social development plan 2035, as well as a better elaboration of the next UN system development Sustainable Cooperation Framework covering the period 2024-2028 and the different country program Documents.
