About the ICPD Programme of Action
The ICPD Programme of Action is a landmark document that was adopted at the International Conference on Population and Development in 1994. The program of action calls for a rights-based approach to SRHR, and sets out a number of goals and objectives to be achieved by 2015.
The ICPD Programme of Action has had a significant impact on SRHR around the world. Since the adoption of the program of action, there has been a marked increase in the number of women using contraception, a decrease in maternal mortality, and an increase in the number of girls attending school.
However, there are still significant challenges to achieving the goals of the ICPD Programme of Action. Millions of women and girls around the world still lack access to quality SRHR services.
The 2024 Oslo International Conference was a timely opportunity to take stock of progress made in implementing the ICPD Programme of Action, and to identify challenges and opportunities for further progress. The conference brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, and generated a renewed commitment to the ICPD Programme of Action.
